Windows uses drive letters to identify volumes. Mac does not. The problem created here is that when users share Resolve Project files on Mac and Windows, the file paths linked to a timeline differ, forcing a relink of assets every time a timeline or project is shared.
In order to avoid this, Premiere has a solution that can establish 2 file paths - one Windows and one Mac. This may initially require you to relink in order to establish 2 paths, but once established, you should be able to avoid relinking thereafter.
Here are the steps:
Premiere will remember multiple paths for media - it has an “active” path, and 2 “backup” paths, and these can be a mix of UNC and Drive Letter paths. Once files are linked on both, the project will remember both the Mac and Windows paths and should relink without asking.
So, the process is something like this:
Create a project on a machine - let’s begin with Mac for this example.
Media is imported and the project remembers the UNC path
Project is closed and re-opened on a Windows Machine. Media is on the M:\ Drive.
Premiere displays a “Link Media” dialogue box. Editor must connect one file to the media on the M:\ drive and Premiere auto-relinks everything based on that pathing.
Project can now be opened on both Windows and Mac without relinking.
