Creating Proxies with Optimized Media

Strada lets your compress large files into files up to 100 times smaller in order to edit remotely over limited internet bandwidth.

Written by Michael Cioni

Large files that come from camera originals are often too large to edit smoothly over the open internet. May original camera files (OCF) can be between 400Mbps (megabits per second) and 4Gbps (gigabits per second). The average internet speed is closer to 100Mbps which means original camera files may not playback smoothly across internet connections.

In order to have smooth playback for remote editors, the OCF files need to be closer to 10Mbps, especially when working with multicam video and multiple audio channels. Strada Optimized Media is a beta feature that is available on Mac and will automatically compress files between 10x and 100x smaller than the original. Follow these steps and Strada will help shrink the files for smooth playback.

When Strada makes optimized proxy media, it will:

• retain the original clipname (filename)

• retain the original timecode

• pass through the original audio configuration

• preserve the in-camera color matrix & embedded LUT / look

By preserving this original metadata in the Strada proxy, files can be relinked back to the original RAW files at any time.

  1. Go to Strada Settings (Gear) menu in the lower left and scroll down to Beta Updates and TURN ON the Beta Updates toggle. Then RESTART the Strada Finder application by clicking "Restart" at the bottom of the Settings page.

2. Choose the default layout based on your preferred editing system. This layout is a visual representation of the proxy files and can be changed by different users. It can also be changed at any time in the future and will automatically rearrange the layout of your media.

3. Navigate to original camera files (OCF) or RAW files and RIGHT+CLICK on the root folder containing the files you want to optimize into proxies. You will see the "Optimized Media" option to select.

4. Strada will show you the Optimized Media panel and analyze how many files you have and how big the original files are. Strada will then estimate how small the proxy files will be. This is an automatic process and will shrink files between 10x and 100x smaller than the original with a target bitrate of 10Mbps (10 megabits per second).

Your default layout of the folder location can be changed here if you want.

5. After you choose "Optimize Folder" Strada will automatically add files into a queue so you can see the progress. Click the LIGHTNING BOLT icon in the left NAVIGATION panel. This will open the library of all your Optimized Media jobs. You can click on the job in progress and see the files being encoded in realtime.

This process is happening locally on the server side. This means remote editors can initiate proxies but the transcoding happens where the RAW files are currently located.

6. If you click into the folder being created, you can see a new "Proxy" folder which is automatically generated and Strada will respect the folder structure of the original camera files. This way you don't have to do any media management or folder creation in order to remain organized.

7. If you want to change the layout, click on the "OPTIMIZED" folder and select different layouts. These layouts are suggestions by the editing systems (Resolve, Premiere and Final Cut) and will arrange files in a way that the editing software prefers. But the layout does not change the files themselves. You can always choose your own directory location if you want.

8. Once the proxies are complete, you may need to RIGHT+CLICK on the root directory of RAW files and "Reveal in Finder" in order to drag+drop them into editing software.

Viewing though Strada Connect, files in the FINDER will show the new PROXY files which can be imported directly into your editor.

Depending on the camera files you are trying to compress, you may need to install special codecs.
